Phân họ Lan biểu sinh được chia thành hai nhánh hoặc hai phân nhóm, gọi là Lan biểu sinh bậc cao và Lan biểu sinh bậc thấp. Nhóm Lan biểu sinh bậc cao một phần là đơn ngành và một phần là đa ngành (các tông Arethuseae và Epidendreae). Nói chung, sự phân loại này được thay đổi thường xuyên.
