Có tất cả 32 quân cờ chia đều cho hai bên (xanh/đỏ), mỗi bên có 16 quân (6 loại quân) bao gồm 1 Chúa (Trịnh/Nguyễn), 2 Vệ, 2 Tượng, 2 Mã, 2 Xe và 7 Tốt.
Chúa được xếp ở hàng đầu tiên - cột trung tâm, bên trái và bên phải Chúa là 2 Vệ, ra ngoài là 2 Tượng rồi đến 2 Mã và 2 Xe nằm ở 2 cột ngoài cùng. Các Tốt được xếp ở các cột 1,2,4,5,6,8,9 - hàng thứ 3 mỗi bên.

Là quân quan trọng nhất trên bàn cờ, Trịnh/Nguyễn hay Chúa đi và bắt quân 1 ô theo mọi hướng nhưng chỉ trong phạm vi "vùng cấm" bên mình.

==== Tốt (卒) ====
Là quân yếu nhất trên bàn cờ, Tốt đi và bắt quân 1 ô về phía trước, có thể bắt ngang 1 ô nếu có quân đối phương đứng ngay bên cạnh, khi đi đến hàng thứ 5 thì Tốt có thể đi ngang.
Tốt khi đi đến hàng cuối cùng thì sẽ phong cấp bằng cách thay quân Tốt bằng một quân chủ lực Xe, Mã, Tượng đã bị bắt trước đó. Tốt cũng có lựa chọn là không phong cấp nếu chưa có quân chủ lực nào bị bắt hoặc tùy theo hình cờ.
