One of the worse setbacks suffered by the British during WWII was the Japanese conquest of their colonies, Malaya and Singapore. Among the many disasters of the campaign was the lost of Force Z, 2 of Royal Navy Finest ships, the battleship Prince of Wales and battle cruiser Repulse. Sending to battle without air cover, it was sunk by Japanese aircrafts. Senior naval commander blundered by underestimating air power threat to major motion . Japan caught its hungry-eyes on Malaya, and views it as critical to its own projected empire, the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere, which it achieve by military forces.
During the night, Force Z sailed on its own . At 3:00 am, another Japanese submarine sighted it and fired torpedo, but with no success. Acting on the submarine’s information, Japanese air reconnaissance tried to find Force Z. It failed because of Philip subsequent change of course towards Kuantan, but the Japanese continued to scout the area. At 11:00 am, a Japanese reconnaissance aircraft saw Force Z through the gap on the clouds. The Thailand’s base naval bombers already airborne with direct to the sea and launched attack on the two big ships. Most of the Japanese aircrafts concentrated on Prince of Wales, which was steaming astern of Repulse. Eventually, they hit her, forcing her to reduce speed. Fifteen minutes later, another wave, this time torpedo bombers arrived. Again, the battleship Prince of Wales was hit, her speed was further reduced, and she began to settle. Repulse too was now struck by torpedoes, which jammed her rather forcing her to steam in a circle. The now crippled Prince of Wales desperately zigzagged in reference to avoid other damages as the Japanese continued to attack her. With the jam rugged her, Repulse was virtually helpless. She suffered further torpedo strike, but miraculously remained to flow. Eventually, Repulse received a fatal hit. She lifted, and then sank at 12:35 pm. High level bombers now made the final attack on Prince of Wales. However, accurate bombing from the high out attitude against a relatively small target like a ship, is by no mean easy. Most of the bombs missed. But there could be no escape for the now crippled battleship. The fundamental flaw of Philip’s thinking had been rustically exposed. A bomb eventually penetrated the ship’s deck, causing in the casual station below. Philip ordered the crews to abandon ship. Ten minutes later, at 1:20 pm, the mighty battleship Prince of Wales capsized and sank. No less than 840 British sailors from the 2 ships lost their lives, including aimer Tom Philip himself. The remainders, shocked by the sudden destruction of Force Z, were picked up by the company destroyer.
Upon siting the target, aimed for a point at the centre of the ship, as you dive shout at the top of your lungs “Hisatsu”. Kill we that fail..just before the collision it is essential you do not shut your eyes. You will feel that you are suddenly floating in the air ..at that moment you will see mothers face.. Then you are no more.
War is selfless but not suicidal, this dedicated to the kamikaze pilots and the soldiers who died in WW2.
