Ban đầu được trưng bày trong một [[Đền thờ Ai Cập|ngôi đền]], phiến đá gần như chắc chắn đã bị di chuyển dưới giai đoạn đầu đạo Cơ đốc và thời kỳ [[Trung Cổ]] và cuối cùng được dùng làm vật liệu xây dựng cho công trình [[pháo đài Julien]] gần thành phố Rashid (Rosetta) ở [[châu thổ sông Nin]]. Nó đã được phát hiện lại vào năm 1799 bởi một người lính, Pierre-François Bouchard, của [[Pháp xâm lược Ai Cập|quân đoàn viễn chinh Pháp tại Ai Cập]].
