Từ năm 1852 tới năm 1967, giải phân ra 2 loại: diễn viên người Anh xuất sắc nhất và diễn viên nước ngoài xuất sắc nhất. Từ năm 1968, hai giải trên hợp nhất thành một. Tên "Nam diễn viên xuất sắc nhất trong một vai chính" được sử dụng từ năm 1995.
