Tên gọi ''Goa'' đến từ các ngôn ngữ châu Âu từ những người thực dân Bồ Đào Nha, nhưng nguồn gốc chính xác thì không rõ lắm. Sử thi Ấn Độ ''[[Mahabharata]]'' gọi khu vực ngày nay là Goa vớit tên 'Goparashtra' hay 'Govarashtra"' có nghĩa một quốc gia của người chăn bò.
