Khi [[Chiến tranh thế giới thứ nhất|Đệ nhất thế chiến]] bắt đầu thì Viên có khoảng 2,1 triệu dân. Giữa năm 1910 và 1918 viên là thành phố lớn thứ tư thế giới, trước khi Viên bị Berlin vượt qua mặt. Sau Đệ Nhất thế chiến thì Viên mất đi khoảng 200 ngàn dân; nhiều người công chức và nhân viên văn phòng không thuộc gốc nói tiếng Đức trở về quê hương của họ. Sau hàng chục năm dân số cứ giảm đều, cho đến thập niên 90 của thế kỷ 20 thì Wien lại trở thành thành phố với nhiều dân di cư đến. Trong số dân sống vào năm 2012 thì có đến 22,3% là không có quốc tịch Áo, 31,1% không sinh ra ở Áo. Trong số 386.000 người không có quốc tịch Áo thì 9% là người Đức, 27,2% từ các nước khác trong khối [[Liên minh châu Âu|Liên hiệp châu Âu]], hay Thụy Sĩ, 31% từ các nước mà trước đây thuộc nước [[Nam Tư]], và 11% là người Thổ.
