He specialized in [[torpedo]] warfare in his studies; after his graduation from the [[Naval War College (Japan)]] in 1919 and promotion to [[lieutenant commander]] on December 1, 1921, he was given his first command, the destroyer {{Ship|Japanese destroyer|Take||2}}. He subsequently commanded {{Ship|Japanese destroyer|Shimakaze|1920|2}}<ref name="flix" /> and {{Ship|Japanese destroyer|Asakaze||2}}. He served as chief torpedo officer on {{Ship|Japanese battleship|Kongō||2}} in 1925, and was promoted to commander on December 1 of the following year.
