Sau khi tiếp quản đội bóng, Mourinho đã thực hiện nhiều cải cách mạnh mẽ. Ông bán đi rất nhiều cái tên thi đấu thiếu hiệu quả dưới thời Van Gaal như: Schneiderlin, Depay, Schweinsteiger và mang về cho đội bóng mình những gương mặt mới như Ibrahimovic, Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Eric Bailly. Mourinho đã cố gắng hết sức để thổi lối chơi tấn công cho United và dù thiếu may mắn ở mùa 2016-2017 do có quá nhiều trận hoà, ông vẫn giúp MU dự Champion League mùa tời nhờ vô địch cup Europe League.
