Đơn vị năm ánh sáng xuất hiện chỉ một vài năm sau khi [[Friedrich Bessel]] đo thành công khoảng cách đến một ngôi sao khác ngoài Mặt Trời vào năm 1838. Although modern astronomers often prefer to use the [[parsec]], light years are also popularly used to gauge the expanses of interstellar and intergalactic space.
