Shinkai Makoto đã nói rằng, không giống như các tác phẩm của ông trước đó, không có bất kỳ yếu tố kỳ ảo hay khoa học viễn tưởng nào trong bộ phim này. Thay vào đó nó sẽ trình bày một cách chân thật thế giới thực với nhiều góc độ khác nhau. Phim cho thấy nhiều mặt của cuộc sống luôn đấu tranh và cùng tồn tại với nhau như thời gian, không gian, con người và tình yêu.
