Hình thức cơ bản của thầy đạo phát triển trong kỷ nguyên Pharisaic và Talmudic, khi các thầy giáo đã nghiên cứu và tập hợp để soạn thảo các luật bằng văn bản và những luật bằng miệng của Do thái giáo.
