Hệ thống hành chính hiện nay được thành lập năm 1994 và được sửa đổi vào năm 2000 để đáp ứng các yêu cầu của Liên minh châu Âu. 10 hạt của nước này (tiếng Litva: singular - apskritis , plural - apskritys) được chia thành 60 thành phố (tiếng Litva: singular - savivaldybė , plural - savivaldybės ), và chia thành 500 "seniūnija".
