Tên Dromaeosauridae có nghĩa là 'thằn lằn chạy', từ [[Hy Lạp cổ đại|tiếng Hy Lạp]] ''dromeus'' (δρομευς) có nghĩa là "Người chạy" và ''sauros'' nghĩa là "thằn lằn" (σαυρος).
