Trung Quốc gọi chim Kiwi là Duật đà (Seolopacidac) - là chim nguyên thủy nhất trong họ nhà duật. Nó có hình dạng như quả lê, mình mọc lông vũ nhỏ lồng bồng, không có lông cánh cũng chẳng có lông đuôi. Không biết bay, nhưng đôi chân ngắn khỏe, chạy nhanh, tốc độ khoảng 16&nbsp;km/giờ. Lúc cáu, nó có thể đá bật một con chim đồng loại ra xa đến 2,5m.

Chim Kiwi mỏ nhọn và dài, khi nghỉ, chiếc mỏ trở thành chân thứ 3 để giữ thân cho vững. Lỗ mũi ở ngay trên đầu nhọn của mỏ, chức năng ngửi rất kỳ lạ, có thể phát hiện con sâu nhỏ ở dưới lớp đất đến 30&nbsp;cm. Chim Kiwi ăn giun côn trùng, thịt quả, lá non. Ban ngày ẩn trống trong hốc cây, kẽ đá, hang đất, đến tối mới đi kiếm mồi. Mắt nó nhỏ và thị lực kém, ban ngày khi đi vấp hàng rào vẫn không biết đường.

Kiwi mái thường 2 năm mới đẻ trứng một lần, mỗi lần 2 quả. Tuy nó chỉ to bằng gà mái, nhưng trứng to gấp 5 lần, bằng 1/4 - 1/3 trọng lượng cơ thể. Nếu xét tỷ lệ giữa trọng lượng trứng và trọng lượng cơ thể, có thể nói trứng Kiwi to nhất trong các loài chim. Một điều đặc biệt, chim Kiwi là loài thú có vú đẻ trứng thứ hai trên thế giới, bên cạnh thú mỏ vịt.
