Hiện nay thành phố Vĩnh Yên đang được đầu tư rất mạnh để trở thành đô thị loại I vào năm 2019, nhân dịp 120 năm đô thị Vĩnh Yên. Và thành phố này cùng với thành phố Phúc Yên và thị xã Bình Xuyên (dự kiến thành lập trước năm 2020) để trở thành trung tâm của thành phố Vĩnh Phúc trực thuộc trung ương sau năm 2020.
