Theo số liệu tháng 7 năm 2007, dân số của Hy Lạp là 10.706.290 người. Con người đã đến vùng đất ngày nay là Hy Lạp từ [[Thời đại đồ đá cũ|Thời kỳ Đồ đá cũ]] vào khoảng 3000 năm trước công nguyên. Sau đó, tổ tiên của người Hy Lạp đã đến đây vào khoảng thiên niên kỷ thứ hai trước Công nguyên và xây dựng những nền văn minh rực rỡ. Vào khoảng thế kỉ thứ 5 trước Công nguyên, có 3 triệu dân sinh sống trên bán đảo Hy Lạp và 6 triệu người Hy Lạp định cư tại nhiều vùng khác nhau quanh khu vực [[Địa Trung Hải]]. Trong thời kỳ [[Đế quốc Đông La Mã|Đế chế Byzantine]], nhiều dòng người khác nhau, chủ yếu là người [[Người Slav|Slav]] và người [[Do Thái]] đã nhập cư vào Hy Lạp. Đến khi bán đảo Hy Lạp bị thống trị bởi [[Đế quốc Ottoman|Đế chế Ottoman]], nhiều người Hy Lạp đã rời bỏ đất nước để sang [[Tây Âu]]. Trong khoảng thời gian từ cuối [[thế kỷ 19|thế kỉ 19]] cho đến khi kết thúc [[Chiến tranh thế giới thứ hai|Thế chiến thứ hai]], một dòng người Hy Lạp rất lớn cũng di cư sang [[Hoa Kỳ|Mỹ]], [[Canada]] và [[Úc]] để thoát khỏi tình trạng bất ổn trong nước.
