Amchitka was selected by the [[United States Atomic Energy Commission]] to be the site for underground [[nuclear testing|detonations]] of [[nuclear weapons]]. Three such tests were carried out: ''Long Shot'', an {{convert|80|kt(TNT)|adj=on|lk=on}} blast in 1965; ''Milrow'', a {{convert|1|Mt(TNT)|sp=us|adj=on}} blast in 1969; and ''Cannikin'' in 1971 – at {{convert|5|Mt(TNT)|abbr=on}}, the largest [[underground nuclear testing|underground test]] ever conducted by the United States. The tests were highly controversial, with [[environmentalism|environmental groups]] fearing that the ''Cannikin'' explosion, in particular, would cause severe [[earthquake]]s and [[tsunami]]s.
