Tháng 4 năm [[1737]], có lẽ do đột quỵ, tay phải của Handel bị liệt nên ông phải tạm dừng các cuộc trình diễn. Đồng thời, ông cũng bị suy giảm thị lực. Handel đến [[Aix-la-Chapelle]] để tắm nước nóng và trình diễn organ.
Sau khi sức khỏe được phục hồi, Handel tập trung soạn các bản [[oratoria]] (nhạc Kinh Thánh) thay vì viết nhạc opera. Messiah ra mắt ngày [[13 tháng 4]] năm [[1742]] tại New Musick Hall trên Đường Fishamble, Thành phố [[Dublin]].
