Khi trước, Hoàng đế Napoléon ly hôn vì Hoàng hậu Joséphine không thể sinh cho ông một người con trai để kế vị. Đến khi ông cưới Hoàng hậu Marie, bà đã hạ sinh cho Hoàng đế Napoléon một vị Thái tử, sẵng sàng củng cố Hoàng vị của triều đại.
