Phát hiện được dầu mỏ tại Kuwait từ năm 1938. Từ năm 1946 đến năm 1982, Kuwait trải qua hiện đại hoá quy mô lớn. Trong thập niên 1980, Kuwait trải qua một giai đoạn bất ổn địa chính trị và một cuộc khủng hoảng kinh tế sau khi thị trường chứng khoán sụp đổ. Năm 1990, Kuwait bị [[Xâm lược Kuwait|Iraq xâm lược]]. Thời kỳ Iraq chiếm đóng kết thúc vào năm 1991 sau khi lực lượng liên quân [[chiến tranh Vùng Vịnh|can thiệp quân sự]]. ===Nước và khử muối===

Kuwait không có sông chảy thường xuyên, chỉ có một số [[wadi]] (thung lũng sông thường cạn), nổi tiếng nhất là al Batin tạo thành biên giới giữa Kuwait và Iraq. Ngôn ngữ chính thức của Kuwait là tiếng Ả Rập tiêu chuẩn hiện đại, song nó chỉ được sử dụng hàng ngày trong báo chí và giáo dục.
