Những trường hợp bắt chước nhau đồng tính, giả đồng tính đều có nguyên nhân như bị hụt hẫng tâm lý hoặc bế tắc trong cuộc sống gia đình, công việc… Nhiều người trẻ, cuộc sống quá nhạt nhòa, muốn khẳng định mình (không có trình độ, thiếu hiểu biết, kỹ năng sống) đã bắt chước đồng tính để được người khác chú ý đến mình. Hiện tượng này mới nổi lên ở Việt Nam do một bộ phận nam sinh và du học sinh đua đòi rồi lan truyền cho nhau. Họ coi như một thú chơi, ai muốn được coi là "dân chơi" thì đều phải có cái thú này. Tổ chức Y tế thế giới đã kết luận đồng tính không phải là bệnh nhưng lại có sự ''"lây lan"'' đáng sợ thông qua sự a dua, cổ súy từ bạn bè hoặc [[truyền thông]]. Về mặt bệnh lý học tâm thần, họ được xếp vào nhóm bệnh lệch chuẩn hành vi tình dục.
 
Những nghiên cứu trên cho thấy: Tính linh động của thiên hướng tình dục phụ thuộc vào từng cá nhân. Đối với nhiều người, thiên hướng tình dục không phải là bẩm sinh mà nó có thể biến đổi theo thời gian, có thể từ dị tính sang đồng tính hoặc ngược lại. Sự biến đổi diễn ra như thế nào phụ thuộc vào yếu tố cá nhân và [[Yếu tố môi trường trong thiên hướng tình dục|yếu tố môi trường]] (sự tác động của văn hóa xã hội, tôn giáo, gia đình, bạn bè...).
