Cuộc Đại Tỉnh thức lần thứ nhất khởi phát từ những lời thuyết giáo mạnh mẽ và đầy sức thuyết phục tập chú vào việc quở trách [[tội lỗi]] và nhu cầu nhận lãnh ơn [[cứu rối|cứu chuộc]] qua hành động công khai xưng tội để tiếp nhận ân điển của Thiên Chúa, dẫn người nghe đến “trải nghiệm tiếp xúc với Thiên Chúa theo cách riêng của mỗi người”.
