Deer exclosure fence, Pinchot State Forest, Lackawanna County.
The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, or DCNR, fences off tracts of land that it has logged. By excluding deer, the fences permit the forest to regenerate.
Note the differences on each side of the fence. Inside the fence is a riot of undergrowth; outside, mostly heaths, hay-scented ferns, and other vegetation that deer find unpalatable. Fortunately, this paucity of undergrowth isn’t found everywhere in the forest. The stream corridors and wetland areas, for instance, have rich undergrowth.
