While visiting the Vietnamese Wikipedia, you might have noticed that every page has an additional set of options on its left side. The Gõ tiếng Việt panel below the search above the Toolbox is for customizing AVIM, a combination Vietnamese input method editor, written in JavaScript and released under an MIT-style license. These input methods allow users to type correctly accented Vietnamese text using a standard, English-layout keyboard.

AVIM has been in use at the Vietnamese Wikipedia since 2005. JavaScript-based input methods are typical of Vietnamese-language websites, since most operating systems come with poor support for the language. The Vietnamese Wiktionary, Vietnamese Wikibooks, Vietnamese Wikisource, Vietnamese Wikiquote, and Vietnamese Wikivoyage also feature AVIM. Other Wikimedia wikis have similar keyboarding features, thanks to the Narayam extension.

The panel you see on each page allows you to choose which input method to type with:

  • Automatic (tự động), a combination of the Telex and VNI input methods
  • Telex
  • VNI
  • VIQR
  • VIQR*, a variant of VIQR that uses * instead of +.

Each input method has its advantages and disadvantages, so AVIM lets each user use the one he or she prefers. There are two additional options:

  • Bỏ dấu kiểu cũ allows you to choose the style of Vietnamese orthography you want to write with. The "old" style places accents above the first vowel in words that end in diphthongs, so both xo'a and xoa' come out as xóa. If this option is unchecked, both come out as xoá.
  • Đúng chính tả works kind of like a spell checker. Say a word does not conform to Vietnamese spelling rules – which typically means it's a foreign word or name. If you have chosen the Telex input method, as normally comes out as á, but if the spell-checking option is enabled and you type in Washington, you will get Washington; if the option is disabled, you will get Wáhington.
Mark Example Key(s) pressed
Telex VNI VIQR VIQR*
Tone marks
Acute (sắc) á s 1 ' '
Grave (huyền) à f 2 ` `
Hook (hỏi) r 3 ? ?
Tilde (ngã) ã x 4 ~ ~
Dot below (nặng) j 5 . .
Other diacritical marks
Circumflex () â (double vowel) 6 ^ ^
Horn (móc) ơ w 7 + *
Breve (trăng) ă w 8 ( (
Stroke (gạch ngang) đ dd 9 dd dd
(Remove a diacritic) z 0 - -

A diacritic can be added anywhere in the word following its vowel, and the horn is duplicated as necessary for "ươ". For instance, using VIQR, đường can be written ddu+o+`ng, duong+`d, or even dduong+`'`'`.
