Tầng Messina trong niên đại địa chất là kỳ cuối cùng của thế Miocen, và trong thời địa tầng học là bậc trên cùng của thống Miocen và của hệ Neogen. Kỳ Messina tồn tại từ ~ 7.246 Ma đến 5.333 Ma (Ma: Megaannum, triệu năm trước).[2]

Kỳ Messina kế tục kỳ Tortona của cùng thế Miocen, và tiếp sau là kỳ Zancle của thế Pliocen.[3]
