Nghĩa đen của từ này là : thầy dạy về thiền , tuy vậy trong phật giáo Đại thừa thì không phải ai dạy thiền cũng được gọi là thiền sư, danh từ này dùng cho các bậc chứng ngộ được ấn chứng, hoặc là tấn phong cho các nhà sư, cao tăng đã viên tịch.
