Con người đã cố gắng dự báo thời tiết trong nhiều thiên niên kỷ. Năm 650 BC, người Babylon tiên đoán thời tiết dựa vào hình dạng của các đám mây cũng như dựa vào chiêm tinh học. though computers did not exist to complete the vast number of calculations required to produce a forecast before the event had occurred. Practical use of numerical weather prediction began in 1955, Rideout came from the U.S. Weather Bureau, as did WBZ weather forecaster G. Television forecasts followed with Jimmie Fidler in Cincinnati in 1940 or 1947 on the Television Network.<ref>{{chú thích báo| url=http://www.usatoday.com/weather/wforund.htm | title=Answers: Understanding weather forecasts | date = ngày 8 tháng 2 năm 2006
