== Nguồn gốc tên gọi ==

Tên gọi ''Goa'' đến từ các ngôn ngữ châu Âu từ những người thực dân Bồ Đào Nha, nhưng nguồn gốc chính xác thì không rõ lắm. Sử thi Ấn Độ ''[[Mahabharata]]'' gọi khu vực ngày nay là Goa vớit tên 'Goparashtra' hay 'Govarashtra"' có nghĩa một quốc gia của người chăn bò. 'Gopakapuri' hay 'Gapakapattana' đã được sử dụng trong một số văn bản [[tiếng Phạn]] cổ, và những tên gọi này cũng đã được đề cập trong những văn bản [[Ấn Độ giáo|Hindu]] linh thiêng khác như ''[[Harivansa]]'' và ''[[Skanda Purana]]''. Trong bản Skanda Purana, Goa cũng được gọi là "Gomanchala".
