Năm 2049, những [[người nhân bản]] đã được hòa nhập với cộng đồng nhưng chủ yếu đóng vai trò phục tùng và nô lệ cho con người. Người nhân bản dòng Nexus-9 biệt danh "K" làm việc cho [[Sở Cảnh sát thành phố Los Angeles|LAPD]] dưới danh nghĩa một "blade runner", chuyên săn lùng và cho "về hưu" những người nhân bản đời cũ. Khi cho về hưu Sapper Morton tại một trang trại protein, anh tìm thấy chiếc thùng bị chôn dưới gốc gây có chứa hài cốt của một người nhân bản nữ đã qua đời trong quá trình sinh nở. Điều này dấy lên luận điểm rằng người nhân bản có thể sinh sản về mặt sinh học, một điều vốn trước đây bị coi là vô lý. Trung úy Joshi, cấp trên của K, e ngại phát hiện này có thể dẫn tới một cuộc chiến giữa loài người và người nhân bản nên đã ra lệnh cho K truy tìm và thủ tiêu đứa bé.

Tiến sỹ Steline, nhà thiết kế ký ức người nhân bản, đã xác nhận rằng ký ức của K về trại trẻ mồ côi là có thật, điều này càng khiến K tin rằng mình chính là con trai của Rick Deckard và Rachael. Sau khi bị bắt về LAPD, K đã không qua được bài kiểm tra cảm xúc, điềuvà nàysau biếnsự việc này anh chính thức trở thành một người nhân bản nổi loạn. AnhK nói dối Joshi rằng đứa bé đã bị anh giết, và bà cho anh 48 giờ để bỏ trốn. Để không bị lần ra dấu vết, Joi yêu cầu K chuyển cô vào bộ phát sóng di động.
