Feodor Lynen sinh tại [[München]], [[Đức]]. Ông bắt đầu học [[hóa học]] ở Phân khoa Hóa học của [[Đại học Ludwig Maximilian München|Đại học München]] năm 1930 và đậu bằng [[tiến sĩ]] trong tháng 3 năm 1937 dưới sự hướng dẫn của [[Heinrich Otto Wieland|Heinrich Wieland]] với bản luận án tên
Sau đó ông làm giảng viên ở đại học này nhiều năm, và trở thành giáo sư năm 1947. Từ năm 1954 trở đi, ông làm giám đốc
