Sau [[Chiến tranh thế giới thứ hai]], Alekhine không còn được mời tham dự giải đấu nào ngoài bán đảo Iberia, bởi vì những cáo buộc cộng tác với Đức Quốc Xã trong chiến tranh. Lời mời tham dự Giải London năm 1946 cũng bị hủy vì sự phản đối của các đấu thủ khác<ref name=DenkerParr/>.
 
Trong khi đang chuẩn bị cho trận tranh ngôi vô địch thế giới với Botvinnik<ref name=KharitonBattleThatNeverWas/>, Alekhine qua đời tại phòng khách sạn ở [[Estoril]], Bồ Đào Nha vào ngày 24 tháng 3 năm 1946. Nguyên nhân cái chết của ông vẫn còn không rõ ràng. Nó thường được cho là do đau tim, nhưng một lá thư trên tạp chí ''[[Chess Life]]'' của một nhân chứng trong cuộc khám nghiệm tử thi cho biết nguyên nhân là nghẹn thịt.
