Đảo Newfoundland (ban đầu được gọi là ''Terra Nova'', nghĩa là "vùng đất mới" trong [[latinh|tiếng Latinh]] và [[tiếng Ý]]) đã được [[Giovanni Caboto|John Cabot]] người Ý (Giovanni Caboto) đặt tên năm 1497.
