My father says that my family members aren't yet ''Việt kiều''. Although we are Vietnamese, and we are overseas (in the United States), we haven't gone back to Vietnam. If we someday visit Vietnam, my parents would be called ''Việt kiều''. I technically wouldn't, because I was born in the US, not in Vietnam. He told me this a while ago; I hope I remember that correctly.
Anyhow, Neoneurone was just trying to make the distinction between native Vietnamese speakers and people like you and I, who don't speak Vietnamese quite fluently. If I understand the phrase ''Việt kiều'' correctly, I think it's incorrect to call us that. But he's right in saying that we often make mistakes or awkward constructions, letting our native languages (like English, Dutch, German, etc.) interfere with our translation. I hope he'll be able to help us out about that. –
