Kota Kinabalu sửa

Hi there. I would love to see the article about the lovely city of Kota Kinabalu become a featured article in Wikipedia Vietnamese, but as of now the English article itself has less than enough sources to meet Wikipedia Vietnamese's criteria of FA. Could you suggest anything to make it become a Good Article here instead? PID (thảo luận) 14:49, ngày 19 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Hi, thank you for your response, I'm glad to see someone has interested to helping me about this. Sure, I would be glad also if this article could be developed as a GA here. Ok, I will start it first with collecting a sources. Ranking Update (thảo luận) 11:52, ngày 20 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Wow, so fast! Sorry for the late response.
Okay, here the answer:
  • "Transit eye" almost like "Eye stopover", according to the source, it means the place is a stopover for eyes only, just because they didn't go there to take a break before move to their destination.
  • "State assembly district" means DUN area in Malaysian politics, DUN means Dewan Undangan Negeri in Malay, you can see here and also here on paragraph four for more information about it.
  • Hmm, this one looks very difficult because I can't find the name on Chinese writing. We just called it Che Sui Khor here. :(
  • Yup, it's an office.
You're welcome and thank you so much for expanding this article here.   Ranking Update (thảo luận) 09:38, ngày 30 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
Thanks for your explanation :P. Currently the rough text made with my primitive translation skill is still needed to be revised and polished. PID (thảo luận) 09:16, ngày 31 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
While checking sources of KK's article, I found out a prestigious link affirms that Tawau's Al-Kauthar Mosque was the biggest mosque in Sabah, not Sabah State Mosque (http://www.sabahtourism.com/en/news/531-beachfront-mosque-set-to-be-tourist-draw/). The current link (http://www.mysticborneo.com/index.php/sabah?id=237) is a self-published source, isn't it? PID (thảo luận) 12:41, ngày 31 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
You're welcome :). It's ok ^__^
Ah, I forgot to check this section source, hmm, how about if we change it to the largest in Kota Kinabalu or the main mosque in Kota Kinabalu? :) Ranking Update (thảo luận) 13:12, ngày 31 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
I suggest this source: http://www.sabahtourism.com/sabah-malaysian-borneo/en/destination/97-sabah-state-mosque/. Maybe some info such as the "majestic dome", "5,000 worshippers at one time" can substitute for the "largestness" as these links (1, 2) say that City Mosque is the largest one in KK. :P PID (thảo luận) 14:54, ngày 31 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
Okay, I agree with that.   Ranking Update (thảo luận) 20:32, ngày 31 tháng 5 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Mission nearly accomplished! sửa

Hi. I've just completed revising the article of Kota Kinabalu here. Hope you won't be upset after reading this, but the current English article still has some self-published sources needing attention. I've tried my best to fix them as it's unlikely that the community will say 'O.K' to these sources. Here are some of them:

...

There are also some errors in the article:

  1. " Sabah's first Chief Minister and six other state ministers who died on a plane crash": actually, the source reads "fifth Chief Minister", not "first". — a mistypo on the source, it should be first
  2. "The court complex is located along Jalan Pantai in the city centre.": I can't find any source to support this claim.  YXong
  3. "Suria Shopping Mall has five digital halls while 1Borneo has four digital halls": I assume this phrase is talking about both 2D and 3D halls, but Golden Screen Cinemas' website doesn't list how many digital halls these two cinemas have.  YXong

I had to rewrite much of the History & Climate sections  N Không thực hiện. The English source supposed to support this sentence "During this period (December and January), a surge of cold winds blowing from Siberia can occasionally cause the early morning temperature to drop to 20 °C" doesn't even exist. I suggest you use those alternative references to replace all of those self-published sources:

  • Russel, Andy Immit Mojiol (2006), Ecological Landuse Planning and Sustainable Management of Urban and Sub-urban Green Areas in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Cuvillier Verlag, ISBN 9783867270816 (be aware of this. The author is a professor but it seems like there are some typing errors in this book. For example, it's obvious that heavy rain falls in October according to the statistics he provides, but the book says November to March!)

  PID (thảo luận) 03:26, ngày 3 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

P.S: Could you check this fact: "Kota Kinabalu proper has a population of 452,058, while the larger urban area, which includes the Penampang district, has an estimated population of 651,658."? The 1st figure is OK, but how about the 2nd one? According to 2010 Census, Penampang District has 121,934 people, so the total pop. of the KK metropolian area must be 573,992 people, I think. hmm, seems many to be fixed back. Ok, I will do it after coming back from my holiday. :( Ranking Update (thảo luận) 09:15, ngày 11 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
Already fix all of it except the climate section, I can't copied it directly from here because it still on Vietnamese language, could you help me to rewrite the section on en.wiki? :( Ranking Update (thảo luận) 12:30, ngày 11 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
Um, wait. About the population, I get the source from here. You can see Penampang population on page 8 is 176,667. So 452,058 + 176,667 = 628,725 Ranking Update (thảo luận) 23:40, ngày 12 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
Thank you, I'm going to update the population figure.
The English article uses asianst [dot] org as a source here: <ref>{{cite web|author=Fujio, Hara|title=The 1943 Kinabalu Uprising in Sabah|url=http://www.aasianst.org/absts/1996abst/inter/i181.htm|work=Anti-Japanese Movements in Southeast Asia During World War II|publisher=Association for Asian Studies, Inc. USA|accessdate=4 March 2007}}</ref>. As aasianst dot org is a self-published source, I suggest you replace it with <ref>{{cite book |contribution=Chapter Eight - The 1943 Kinabalu Uprising in Sabah |author=Fujio, Hara |title=Southeast Asian Minorities in the Wartime Japanese Empire |editor=Paul H. Kratoska |publisher=Taylor & Francis |year=2013 |isbn=9781136125065 |pages=111, 113}}</ref> About the Climate section, I'll try my best, but just a heads up that my E is terrible :P. Brunei Times sửa

I think this source is not authentic. That BT's article (January 10, 2011) was published after the original English article, which means it might copy Wikipedia's content. Why do I think so? First, BT was launched not very long ago. It doesn't like New York Times or The Guardian or Le Figaro. Second, the BT's article was written in a way that reminds readers of the same thing on Wikipedia (same vocabulary, same way of organizing info.; you can check this by reviewing the history of en.wiki's article before 10 Jan. 2011). As of now, the BT's article is being cited at:

  • "In 1882, BNBC founded a small settlement in the area known as Gaya Bay, which was already inhabited by Bajau people". My alternative source is: de Ledesma, Charles; Lewis, Mark; Savage, Pauline (2003), Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei (ấn bản 4), Rough Guides, ISBN 9781843530947, page 508. However, this source doesn't say anything about the inhabitation of Bajau people.
    •  YXongWell, I found a source about the inhabitation of Bajau people on the island here.
  • "Jesselton was razed by the retreating British early in World War II to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Japanese". My alternative source is: Wong, Seng Chow (2009), Rice Wine & Dancing Girls: The Real Life Drama of a Roving Cinema Manager in 50s Malaysia and Singapore, Monsoon Books, ISBN 9789810810832, page 156. However, my source doesn't say anything about "prevent it from falling into the hands of the Japanese".
    •  YXongI change the words to meet the source like this:
  • "leaving only three buildings standing". Mine is: de Ledesma, Lewis & Savage 2003, p. 508. BT's source isn't necessary here.
    •  YXong
  • " it became known as Sabah, and Jesselton remained its capital". Mine is: http://corporate.tourism.gov.my/mediacentre.asp?page=feature_malaysia&subpage=archive&news_id=57
    •  YXong
  • "Jesselton was renamed as Kota Kinabalu on 30 September 1968 and received official city status from the Malaysian government on February 2, 2000.". Mine is: http://corporate.tourism.gov.my/mediacentre.asp?page=feature_malaysia&subpage=archive&news_id=57. However, it should be restated like this: "On 22 December 1967, State Legislative Assembly under Chief Minister Tun Mustapha bin Datu Harun passed a bill renaming Jesselton to Kota Kinabalu. The city was upgraded to city status on 2 Feb. 2000".
    •  YXong
  • "The city obtained city status on February 2, 2000,": like above
    •  YXong
  • "It is only one of three pre-World War II buildings to survive the war.". Mine is de Ledesma, Lewis & Savage 2003, p. 508. BT's source isn't necessary here.
    •  YXong

This is just my opinion. Seeking alternative sources gives me a chance to learn about the city of Kota Kinabalu, and it's the best thing after all. :-) PID (thảo luận) 05:12, ngày 17 tháng 6 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Small improvements sửa

Hi Ranking Update. I decided to post here as your en.wiki Talk page looks a bit busy with friendly messages :-) There are still some problems with the English KK article so I believe you may want to take a look at them:

1. Healthcare section:

  • "There are a number of public dental clinics in the city, and also rural clinics in the outskirts.": The current source doesn't support this. It just gives out a list from which I retrieve nothing to support the fact that there are many dental clinics & rural clinics.  YXong
  • "Built in 1957, it is the most important healthcare centre in the city and one of three general hospitals in Sabah.": I added a source to support the 2nd fact ("one of three") ([1]) and changed the 1st one ("most important healthcare centre") into "the largest hospital in Sabah" according to this Malaysian source.  YXong
  • "There are many other private clinics operating in the city": the current source doesn't support this. I rephrased this to: "Furthermore, the city also has two other private medical centres: Damai Specialist Centre (16 beds) and Raffelesia Medical Centre (14 beds)". Sabah Medical Centre is in Luyang (according to the address provided by the source, not Damai).  YXong

2. Ethnicity and religion section

  • "A large number of Indonesians also reside around the city, mostly coming from Celebes, Java, Kalimantan, Flores of the Lesser Sunda Islands.": to what I understand, the source just says something about the Indonesia, not clearly states that "most of them" come from those islands and live "around the city".  YXong

3. Notable personalities section

I took this part out of the parent section Culture and leisure and made it the last section of the article's main content. I call it "Well-known KK people".

  • "Kota Kinabalu is home to a number of independent musicians who have had success in West Malaysia, such as singer-songwriters Pete Teo, Taiwan-based Gary Chaw, and acoustic guitar virtuoso Roger Wang.": this unsourced sentence is very problematic. According to PT profile on en.wiki, he was born Tawau, while I can't find any sources stating that his hometown is KK. Also, this & this show that Gary Chaw comes from Kota Belud.
  • "It is also the native city of popular Malaysian television personality Daphne Iking.": this source claims that Daphne Iking was born in Tambunan, not KK.
  • About Roger Wang, some sources state that he comes from KK but I'm not sure if he was born here.

Since the paragraph becomes too short after being removed those info., I added some interesting things about two famous female politicians: Mary Yap Kain Ching and en:Penny Wong. Mary Yap Kain Ching is the incumbent Deputy Education Minister of Malaysia, while Penny Wong is the incumbent Minister of Finance and Deregulation of Australia. Both of these facts are supported by good sources which you can take at Kota Kinabalu#Một số người Kota Kinabalu nổi tiếng. Luckily, I found out a Malaysian source (Kosmo) supporting the fact that Stacy Anam was born in KK while simultaneously confirming that she's the winner of FA6.  YXong
